How to plan a whole month of content for your small business in an hour

Happy new year! It’s officially 2024, and I’m jumping into January with a brand new website and blog.

One of my New Year’s resolutions is to keep this blog up to date with a series of short but sweet advice articles – guides that help you consistently create top-notch content for your small business.

To be successful in any goal, you need a solid plan. So that’s what this post is all about: getting your promotional ducks in a row for the month ahead with a beautifully organised content calendar.

Let’s dive straight in, shall we? Here’s my four-step method for consistently planning and scheduling timely, relevant content for your small business.

1. Choose one or two content themes that you want to focus on for the next month.

The best themes are both topical and related to what your business does. For example, in January my posts will focus on helping small businesses plan their content for the year ahead.

2. Have a wild 15-minute content planning brainstorm.

Note down every idea you can think of for each of your content themes. Don’t hold back here – anything goes! Set a timer and have at it.

3. Highlight your best content ideas.

Let’s say you’re focusing on Instagram and want to share new posts three times per week. If that’s the case, you’ll want to highlight around 12 ideas for the month.

4. Pull up your calendar and start slotting your best ideas into suitable dates.

Try to post on the same days each week. This keeps scheduling simple while ensuring consistency for your followers. If you’re posting three times per week, you might schedule your posts on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Of course, you can pick whichever days make most sense for your business.

Spend around 15 minutes on each of these steps, and you’ll have come up with a month’s worth of content ideas in an hour. Productive or what?

Don’t rest on your laurels yet, though. You still need to create and share the content you’ve planned. I’ll include some advice on how to do just that in my next post, so keep an eye out!
